Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) can be a powerful tool for any network. It is best described as a layer 2.5 networking protocol. So, MPLS sits between the traditional layers of layer 2 (such as Ethernet) and layer 3 (IP protocols) and provides additional feature for the transport of data across the network.

Virtual private networks (VPN) are point-to-point connections across a private or public network (internet) which uses a special TCP/IP-based protocol to make a virtual call to a virtual port on a VPN server.

If you are looking for a technology with a better quality of service for voice, data and video traffic then you should consider MPLS. MPLS also has better flexibility and can provide the customer with a variety of bandwidth options as well as routing options between locations.

The security with a MPLS network is vastly greater than with a VPN network. MPLS networks are harder for attackers to reach the customer’s endpoints. Using a VPN network is also tough on the user since they have to manage their own devices at the end of each connection.
